It's Fair Game At Fratton

The first Pompey programme fair of 2008 takes place on Sunday, March 30. It will be held in the marquee at Anson Road, near Fratton Park, Portsmouth FC from 11am to 2pm. The fair started out with just four stallholders and about 50 people coming through the doors back in 1980, but it has grown to over 15 stallholders and over 250 collectors of all ages coming to it. Organiser Chris Gibbs says the first few fairs used to be all about programmes, but now the collecting habit has ....

Cup Excitement Gets Mill Turning

So you thought it was only in the January transfer window that rumours, counter-rumours and more rumours took over where Pompey were concerned? Well it seems the club making it through to their first FA Cup semi-final for 16 years, and to Wembley for the first time in 66 years, is breeding more than a few stories too. Central to fans' minds right now is the question of how many tickets Pompey will get when they take on West Brom on April 5 or 6, how these will be ....

It's Pompey V Baggies In The Semis

Pompey will face West Brom in the FA Cup semi-finals. Pompey have beaten them only once in four attempts in the Cup ... in 1939.  The fourth round victory over them was, of course, on the way to the Blues winning the competition - a run that also saw them beat Preston, another of the teams Harry Redknapp's side have beaten on this year's run.  Albion won the three other Cup ties against Pompey, in 1931, 1956 and 1968. Pompey will get significantly more than 25,000 ....

The Warning Pompey Shouldn't Need

It's the warning no-one really needs to give Pompey. Nevertheless, it's worth saying it anyway just in case anyone in the Pompey side forgets ... watch out for that lad Ronaldo. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first Manchester United goal against Pompey with a free-kick -admittedly one that was supposed to be a cross not a shot - past Shaka Hislop at Old Trafford back in November 2003. Since then the Portuguese star has tormented the Blues plenty of times - remember his double at Fratton in ....

We Must Go For It At Old Trafford

He might not be able to play, but that won't stop Jermain Defoe issuing a few words of advice to his team-mates as he prepares to watch them take on Manchester United for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals. Defoe is Cup-tied so will sit out the match on Saturday, but has played against Sir Alex Ferguson's men often enough to know what is needed to overcome them, or at least hold them to a draw - something Pompey have not done on the ground for 14 years. The former Spurs striker, whose old ....

Plenty Vying For Place In Cup Tie

Could Pedro Mendes be a surprise contender for a place in Pompey's team for their FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Saturday? The Portuguese midfielder returned from ankle surgery to play for a Pompey XI in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Bournemouth. He came through the whole game without problems. John Utaka, Lauren, Lucien Aubey, Sean Davis, Richard Hughes, Arnold Mvuemba andMilan Baros all played - and realistically, any of them could feature against a ....

Fans' Anger Over Kick-off Changes

New Hope For Training Ground

Pompey may yet to get to build their purpose-built new training ground in the Fareham area.  Their hope looked dead when Fareham council, backed by English Heritage, refused their plans for a site at Titchfield, but now they have opened talks with the local authority, with rumours that a fresh venue is being looked at. Pompey have appealed against the refusla ofthe Titchfield scheme, which would hold considerable benefits for the local community and for the area's schools, but ....

Toffees Get Injury Boost For Pompey's Visit

Everton look like having a fully-fit squad to choose from when Pompey visit for a European showdown on Sunday. Manager David Moyes says he is expecting Mikel Arteta to be passed fit for a game which neither side will want to lose in the race for a UEFA Cup or Champions League spot. Defoe Can Be A Greaves Or Lineker

Jermain Defoe has been tipped to be a massive hit at Pompey - and has been compared to goal greats like Jimmy Greaves and Gary Lineker. The England and ex-Spurs striker has had a positive start to life with the Blues, with two goals in three games. one was a penalty but both were well-taken - and in front of the Fratton end. Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara, who has watched Pompey numerous times this season and has seen first-hand Benjani's two hat-tricks, reckons Defoe is on another level to ....

Niko's Happy To Wing It

Niko Kranjcar says he was happy to go wing walking as Pompey proved patience can pay off in the Premier League. The Croat said his switch to a wide position on the left early in the second half against Sunderland helped the Blues to victory. Kranjcar was switched as Harry Redknapp  changed his formation to try to unlock a stubborn Sunderland side - and it worked a treayt as Kranjcar found room to torment the Black Cats down their right. One of his runs led to Phil Bardlsey ....

Defoe & Baros To Pair Up Again

JERMAIN DEFOE and Milan Baros are set to be reunited in attack against Sunderland on Saturday after Harry Redknapp indicated he would be giving Kanu a rest. Redknapp appears to be thinking of saving Kanu for the FA Cup tie at Old Trafford in just over a fortnight - although he may use the Nigerian in the league at Goodison Park six days earlier. Kanu has had an injury-hit season and Redknapp does not want to be without him at Old Trafford, where Defoe will be cup-tied. Pompey may also soon ....

3,800 Tickets For Cup Quarter-final

Pompey have an initial 3,800 tickets for their FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Saturday, March 8 - but it will rise to 6,000 seats if demand is exceptional.   Pompey have to let Manchester United know by Thursday whether the extra 2,200 seats will be needed. The fact the game is on Sky and will kick-off at 12.45pm will put some off. Although in 2002-03, when trips to Old Trafford were still a rarity, Pompey took almost 10,000 fans, also for a lunchtime ....

Jamo Is In Demand

Spurs want him (well, have you seen the guy who was playing in goal for them 'til recently?). Fabio Capello wants him (well, have you seen the guy who was playing in goal for England 'til recently?). And maybe Man Utd are a little annoyed at being drawn against David James and Co in the next round of the FA Cup. Pompey Tipped To Make It To Wembley

POMPEY are heading for Wembley. There are plenty of Blues fans saying it - and now Sky's Andy Gray is backing the idea of them reaching the FA Cup final for the first time in 69 years. Bolton Bonus Can't Lift Pompey Higher

POMPEY got two bonus points at Bolton - but are still heading for a finish in seventh place. That's according to our predicted results for the rest of the season, amended after the weekend's games. It means they are still reliant on Champions League sides winning the Cups if they're to make it into the UEFA Cup. We got five out of seven of Saturday's results right - but after being let down by two games on Sunday, we ended up with only six out of 10 correct outcomes. We'd had Pompey down for ....

World Cup Is The Dream For Jamo

David James is hoping his form for club and country will earn him a stab at World Cup glory in 2010. He has set his sights on keeping the England place he has won back through a string of consistent and often-outstanding displays for Pompey. James followed up an England recall from Fabio Cappello last week with a man of the match display at the Reebok, where his saves first kept Pompey in the game at 0-0 and then preserved the late lead given them by Lassana Diarra's goal. The No 1 was ....

As for Defoe, he will become a permanent Pompey player on Thursday or Friday - that also came from Storrie on The Quay's Monday football ....
