Paul Hart says the spirit David James showed in playing through injury all season typified battling qualities in the squad which have saved people’s jobs at Fratton Park.

James has had surgery on a shoulder problem and will be out of England’s summer games. It has emerged he put off the operation until Pompey had secured their Premier League status – and had been in pain for as long as 18 months.

He has been troubled by the injury since the start of 2008 and Hart has praised the character he displayed to carry on playing.

James’ performances this season have drawn criticisms that had escaped him in his first two years at Fratton, but news of this long-term paints a different picture – though it’s worth stressing that James himself has never sought to find excuses for the softer goals he has let in this term.

Hart said: ‘Jamo has put an awful lot at risk. He has been playing with that injury for such a long time.

‘I would think maybe it's 18 months that it's been there although don't ask me what it is. I don't know the medical terms but it has come to a stage when it had to be fixed or else it could have led to serious complications.

‘It's typical of the spirit among the players here and the spirit from the entire club. Jamo has done everything for the fight here.’

Hart said the whole squad deserved credit for keeping Pompey up in tough circumstances.

‘They have all been immense and I have nothing but admiration for everybody,’ he said.

‘Staying up has hopefully saved people's jobs here, people whose jobs are not generally recognised outside the club. Going down to the Championship means tough decisions having to be made about jobs.’

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Spurs are said to be leading the £12m race for Glen Johnson, who has spoken of his pride at winning 10 player of the year awards.
