Sean Davis says Pompey need to keep hold of their best players – but he seems to be heading the list of stars wanted by other Premier League clubs.

The midfielder, who has been transformed this season from fringe player to key man in midfield, is reportedly wanted by Birmingham, Bolton, Wigan and Wolves.

It’s ironic that such strong interest in the ex-Fulham and Spurs player should come soon after he warned the Blues they needed to keep their squad largely intact.

Sol Campbell, Glen Johnson, Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar are the top names being touted for moves away from cash-strapped Pompey after the season ends, and if that calibre of player does move on, then it seems imperative that the likes of Davis are kept on the books.

His no-nonsense midfield style this season has not excaped the attention of clubs who need to strengthen in that area for the new campaign.

Bolton tried to lure him to the Reebok in January but Pompey wanted to keep him – whether finances will allow them to take a similar stance this time remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, one of Davis’ fellow midfielders, Richard Hughes, says Pompey’s players are firmly focused on making sure of their Premier League safety by beating Sunderland next Monday.

The Scot admitted the squad were unhappy with the defeat at Blackburn, which has left the Blues still a little way short of safety, but were desperate to put it right in front of their own fans.

Newcastle's win over Middlesbrough means Boro can no longer reach Pompey's 38-point total. Nor can West Brom which means to send Pompey down. both the Magpies and Hull would need to win one and draw one of their last two - with Hull, who have still to host Man Utd, also needing to make up a few goals.
