Paul Robinson warmed up for his showdown with David James this weekend by insisting talk of an England recall was far from his mind.

Robinson has been in the international wilderness for two years after some high-profile mistakes saw James and the likes of Scott Carson push ahead of him in the bid to be England’s No 1 in the run-up to next year’s World Cup final.

James has done little wrong since becoming Fabio Capello’s first-choice but Robinson says he’ll be ready for action if he ever gets back into the fold.

The pair go head to head on Saturday when Blackburn and Pompey both bid for the win that will make absolutely certain they are safe from relegation. The chances are both already have enough points to be secure.

Robinson has not played for his country since Roman Pavlyuchenko’s double in Moscow and, even though Capello called him up as a late replacement for the November friendly in Germany, he has not made the last two squads.

Robinson said: ‘Do you know what? I’ve not even thought about it really. I’m just concentrating on playing well here. Enjoying my football again has been the most important thing for me. I’m doing that. I’m really enjoying playing and training.

‘To be honest I’ve been an interested spectator with the England thing but I haven’t really given it much thought on a personal level. If it happens, it happens. But if I’m needed, I’m ready, yes.’

Robinson is convinced he made the right decision by signing for Blackburn – and believes he is now close to reaching the form that once made him England’s regular goalkeeper.

Robinson conceded three times in Saturday’s loss at Manchester City but could do little about any of the goals and was outstanding in the previous week’s 2-0 home win against Wigan Athletic, which put Rovers on the verge of securing their Premier League survival.

The 29-year-old, who has 41 caps for his country, said: ‘I’m very pleased with my decision to come here and I think by us hopefully staying in the league this year justifies that.’
