Peter Crouch is out to get Pompey into the UEFA Cup group stage - and further his own chances of getting an England recall.

Crouch got his second goal of the season to kill off Spurs at the weekend and is desperate for another to help the Blues win in Portugal on Thursday night.

And he has admitted that, although scoring for Pompey is his No 1 aim at the moment, he would love to force Fabio Capello to bring him back into the England fold.

He told The News: 'The (England) manager got a great result in Croatia so I don't think he's doing much wrong. All I can do is just play well for Portsmouth and that's what I will do.

'If I catch the eye then great. If I don't then I'll continue working hard and doing my best for Portsmouth.
I've not heard from him, to be honest. But I'll just get my head down and work hard and continue to get results for Portsmouth and get my fair share of goals.'

Crouch is delighted his new partnership with Jermain Defoe is bearing fruit - Sunday was the second time both had scored to help Pompey to victory.

'Things are going well with Jermain. We're striking up a good understanding and I want to keep scoring goals,' Crouch told The News. 'Hopefully, if you can keep doing that you get picked for England.'

'We've played together before and we seem to have clicked straight away. We first came together for the under-21s and I always knew when I came in it was going to work. I'm starting to feel a little sharper now and I think between us we'll get our fair share of goals.

'It was a tough start against Manchester United and Chelsea, but once they were out of the way I think it's worked very well and we play to each others' strengths. We can both score a good amount this season.'

Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp kept the whole of his first team squad wrapped in cotton wool and out of the reserves' clash at home to Chelsea on Tuesday evening, and it was no surprise that a young team lost 2-0.
