Pompey midfielder Lassana Diarra has hailed the Pompey fans after a 'special night' at Fratton Park.

The France international scored Pompey's opening goal in the 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes on Thursday night to give the club a winning start to its first-ever UEFA Cup campaign.

"The club felt it was something special to plain Europe for the first time and I therefore wanted to make sure it was a special evening for the supporters," he said after the match.

"I was happy to win and score in such an important match. the atmosphere was fantastic for 90 minutes. It was sepcial."

Pompey travel to Portugla for the return on October 2, hoping to complete the job and seal a place in the group stafes of the competition.
