Martin Cranie has admitted to being frustrated at his lack of first-team chances at Pompey - but has also praised the Blues coaches for helping him improve as a player.

The England under-21 defender has moved to Charlton Athletic on loan only minutes before the transfer window closed to gain experience in the Championship, in which he played for QPR last season.

Cranie said: 'I have found it pretty frustrating at Pompey over the last year or so. It is hard when you are getting overlooked every week and with Glen Johnson, an England international, there at right-back and people like Sol Campbell and Sylvan Distin in the centre of defence.

'It means I haven’t got much chance of breaking through at the moment. But, having said that, the club has a big squad packed full of superb players and I have learnt so much just from training with them.

'Harry Redknapp is a top manager as well, and I have been with him since my days at Southampton. When I first joined Portsmouth I looked about and I was surrounded by big players like David James, Sol and Sylvan.

'It was quite daunting but since then they have really helped me work on my game and I am seeing the benefits now.'

Cranie is with Linvoy Primus at The Valley - but both players want eventually to be back at Pompey and fighting for a first-team role.
