Harry Redknapp is suddenly spoiled for choice in attack -even if his only decision is which forward to put on the bench.

Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch seem highly unlikely to be split as a front two for most or all of the season, although with six games in 23 days coming up after the international break, there is a chance either could be rested for at least one game.

If Redknapp wants to do that, he has a choice of Kanu, David Nugent and Ben Sahar to fill the gap after Kanu and Nugent both showed they were fit again for the reserves.

Defoe is on international duty with England for the next week and seems likely to feature against Andorra and Croatia after his impressive display at Goodison Park last weekend, so at least Redknapp has back-up should the former Spurs man get injured.

The Pompey boss - who has ruled himself out of the running to take over from Alan Curbishley at his old club West Ham - said he was delighted to see the formerly-injured pair return to the squad.

He told The News: 'It was great to see the pair of them back. We've been short of cover up front. Ideally you want four or five strikers to choose from every game, but so far this season that just hasn't happened.

'These days, with seven players on the bench, you want two strikers sat on it. That hasn't happened yet, we've just had Sahar. Kanu came on in the second half and it was good to see him get a goal. He's been out a while and it's just about getting match practice.

'I thought Nugent looked all right, too. He came off at half-time, but we had agreed that was all he was having. It's important we get the both of them back – they've been out a while.

'We don't want to push them too much, you don't want anything else to happen. We'll just have to see how they get on and whether they can be considered for Boro.'
