HARRY WANTS FOUR - COULD IT BE MORE?

Harry Redknapp says he'd like to make four more signings before the season begins - and that will probably mean him adding around another six.

Estimates of how many buys Pompey will make during any summer or January window tend to be quite conservative, and the final tally is usually a couple bigger than has been predicted.

That's good news for Pompey fans, who have begun to get a little unsettled by the fact only one player - winger Glen Little - has signed so far, although few other Premier League clubs have splashed the cash yet either.

Redknapp, who has also said he can see himself staying at Pompey for several more years, told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'It's going to be interesting playing in the UEFA Cup. But we need a big squad with the number of games it involves.

'It’s difficult to maintain a strong league position and do well in Europe. To do that you need a big squad that you can rotate. I think we need four more good players for a squad capable of fighting on both fronts.

'I need a striker: I’ve only got Jermain Defoe, David Nugent and Kanu. I might even need two strikers, in all honesty, now that Milan Baros has gone back after coming here on loan. Milan did all alright for us. He’s a good lad and worked hard. But I’m really looking for someone to play with Jermain Defoe.

'I’d like another centre-half, a position where we desperately need cover. I’d like another wide player too, because we’re still short in that area even though we’ve signed Glen Little. And I may need someone who can play centre-half or midfield.

'I know the players I like, but getting them is another thing. It’s a waiting game. What happened last season was fantastic – winning the FA Cup and finishing eighth. It will be hard to improve on that, because the top four are on another planet.

'But we’ll be looking for another top half finish – and will try to better where we finished last season. And we’d like to go on another cup run.'

With Peter Storrie away, it may be another week or so before deals start to be wrapped up.

Pompey remain favourites to sign Peter Crouch from Liverpool for 9m, although Spurs, Aston Villa and Manchester City are also interested. Reports persist that Pompey are still monitoring Argentine striker Mauro Zerate at Lazio.
