Harry Redknapp fears the trail to Peter Crouch is beginning to tail off. He is concerned by the lack of movement in Pompey's hopes of landing the England striker at the right price.

Redknapp told of his worries as he admitted he would love to bring another Anfield squad member - Yossi Benayoun - to Fratton.

Benayoun is wanted by Pompey and Manchester City but has hinted he would prefer to stay on Merseyside.

Crouch is a bigger priority for Redknapp but he does not seem confident of landing him - unless, of course, you interpret his latest comments about the striker as a classic Harry smokescreen.

'Of course I'd like to have someone like Yossi Benayoun,' Redknapp told The News. 'He's a top player. I don't know what the chances are of getting him out of Liverpool.

'It's known I like Crouchie, too. But it doesn't look like anything is happening there. I think Liverpool want a bit too much money for him. If that's the case then we'll move on to the next option.'

What the next option is is unclear. There aren't too many top strikers available in this country and Redknapp may have to look abroad if the Crouch deal can't go ahead.

As far as Benayoun is concerned, it's no secret Pompey feel they need more width in the squad before the four-pronged attack on different competitions next season.

Glen Little's addition is a start and Shaun Wright-Phillips - also a target for Aston Villa - is another on the wanted list. But Benayoun's name has been more warmly welcomed by fans than another potential playmaker signing, that of Birmingham's former Everton man James McFadden.

Opinion on the messageboards seems to be that the Scot is no better than anyone Pompey already have.

Meanwhile, chief executive Peter Storrie has told fans not to expect any more signings for a week or two, with many players on holiday or involvd in Euro 2008.
