FRATTON'S REVOLVING DOOR SLOWS DOWN

Another quiet weekend on the transfer front has added fuel to the theory that Pompey's squad won't be as vastly different for the new season as some thought.

That's not to say there won't be some significant new faces in the squad come August 16 at Chelsea - but perhaps there won't be as many as were expected at the end of last season.

Yossi Benayoun is the biggest name to be linked with Pompey over a weekend of few transfer rumours relating to the Blues. He is a player Harry Redknapp has admired from afar before - though the wideman apparently is keen to stay at Anfield and prove himself.

It could be that if the deal to bring Peter Crouch back to Fratton goes through, he could help talk Benayoun into joining him.

Other than that, only the inevitable stories about a couple of promising Belgian youngsters heading this way - that as Pompey plan to announce an official link-up with Belgian club Zulte Waregem - have woken up Blues fans from a mid-June haze.

Meanwhile, Redknapp has suggested that many of last season's fringe players will get a look-in this season if they hang around.

He told The News: 'We want a squad and we are going to need a squad. The players we want to bring in have to give us something different from the ones we already have. We are going to be playing a lot of games.

'With the UEFA Cup, we are going to be playing Saturday-Thursday-Sunday. It's a busy schedule. I'm not going to be able to ask all the lads to play three games in a week. There is no way someone like Sol Campbell is going to be able to do that all the time.

'So we need some players to come in and we need numbers.'

That suggests the likes of Pedro Mendes, Sean Davis, Richard Hughes and David Nugent will all get games if they are still at Fratton for the new season.

What's your view? Should Pompey do all they can hang on to players who might want to move on for regular football? Or should they let some go to free up funds to buy better ones? Let us know on the messageboard - see links below
