A Brazilian midfielder and another defender who could add to Pompey's England brigade have emerged as the latest potential transfer targets being eyed up by Harry Redknapp.

Sky Sports are reporting that Pompey have moved for Panathinaikos' Brazil star Marcelo Mattos.

The midfielder moved to Athens last summer from Corinthians, where he played alongside Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. Mattos enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in Greece, but that has brought attention from around Europe, say Sky.

Mattos signed a four-year deal when he joined Pana but he has a release clause of 7million euros (£5.9m), which Pompey are reported to have matched.

Pompey are said to have been in contact with Mattos' representatives and a deal is close to being struck as Pana cannot refuse the offer. Pana are now looking at their options, including a new deal for the 24-year-old but it appears they are fighting a losing battle.

Meanwhile, Nicky Shorey is another player interesting the Blues as they look for the first of the five new faces they plan to bring in this summer.

Shorey broke into the England side last season, but did not maintain his place - and now must believe a move back to the Premier League from relegated Reading is required if he is to make Fabio Capello sit up and take notice of him again. He is rated around the £3m mark.

In other news, assistant manager Tony Adams looks certain to stay at Fratton Park for a third season. He had indicated last year that his second season as Redknapp's number two would be his last, but he stated recently that the chance to help oversee a UEFA Cup campaign put a different slant on his outlook.

Nicky Shorey - would he be a quality signing, or no better than what Pompey already have? Discuss it now on the messageboars. See links below.
