Pompey fans certainly want Ben Thompson to stay at Fratton and not go back to Millwall, who may yet recall him in January. And maybe Thompson himself is keen to stay where he is - at least for the rest of the season.

If his comments in the build-up to this weekend's visit to Fleetwood are anything to go by it seems the 23-year-old combative midfielder is loving life on the south coast.

He told The News: 'ĎI wasnít wanted at Millwall, I wasnít playing the games, I needed to come out and get the match time and get my confidence back. I couldnít have asked for a better club to come to Ė and I am playing the best football of my career so far.

ĎWhen I played my opening two seasons in League One (with Millwall), I was good, I did well, but didnít feel as confident as I do now. Having played that many games, you know not what to do in certain situations, you know how to react, and I think this is the best form Iíve hit in my career.

ĎIím performing consistently, every week. Obviously I am not going to get an 8 or 9 every week, but even if I donít have my best game itís still a solid six or seven. You might have an off-game where you are have an absolute stinker Ė and then be all right. You have to find your consistency, thatís key to it.'

He added: ĎAs you can see, when I first came I started a few games, did well and then came out because I wasnít up to that match fitness, I wasnít as sharp and confident as I had been. Whereas now Iím feeling more comfortable, Iím up to fitness, up to speed and feeling confident.í

Thompson seems certain to be in a completely or largely unchanged side at Fleetwood, where boss Joey Barton has said there's no stand-out team in League One this season - a view that's hard to argue with now Pompey's lead at the top is down to a point.
