Richie Barker may only have been at the club for a bit more than a month but must win games are coming thick and fast.

With just under half of the season played out, Pompey have changed from promotion favourites to relegation candidates.

One manager change and a few new players has stopped the rot but we still lay periously close to the relegation zone. A win, two draws and a defeat in the last the last four games, have actually left a bittersweet taste in many of Pompey fans' mouths.

Spirited displays and much improved ones in comparison to many this season looked set to reward Pompey with much deserved points but arguably a lack of potency in attack has overshadowed the defensive improvement which has rewarded Pompey with three clean sheets in five.

However, our lack of potency which has seen us fail to score more than once since Barker arrived has slowed our climb away from the dreaded bottom two and leaves us sitting just two points above second bottom Torquay.

Now bad luck cannot be an excuse. A few bad results could propel Pompey directly into the League Two trap door and make the threat of falling out of the Football League an imminent one. So Barker, who wouldn't be under serious pressure unless the situation gets even worse, needs to get Pompey winning games urgently.

Despite how disappointing the season has been and most fans having to re-evaluate their expectations, most will still expect us to finish towards the middle of the table and Barker's future could depend on it as I doubt he'll be certain of keeping his job if we get embroiled in a relegation dog fight towards the end of the season.

As the season goes on, climbing the table will be become harder and harder - Pompey's run of fixtures coming up is quite kind - so if Pompey are to get moving upwards then they need to do so quickly, time is most certainly of the essence. It's more of a subtle situation danger wise but this can change quickly and the future of our Football League status could be taken away from us within a blink of the eye.
