Pompey could have three new names in their side at Oxford on Saturday after completing thre signings in one day. Richie Barker will be delighted to recruit two strikers and a full-back as he bids to get the Blues out of the doldrums.

Up front, competition for places has been boosted by the arrival of Jake Jervis and Ryan Taylor.

Jervis, 22, is awaiting international clearance but has been signed after leaving Turkish side Elazigspor. He has signed a contract until the end of the season.

Jervis told the Pompey website: 'I’m delighted to sign at last. I can’t wait to get out onto the pitch and start playing for Pompey again.

'I really enjoyed my previous loan spell here and had wanted to stay until the end of the season, but Birmingham called me back and it was out of my hands. But my previous time here made me want to come back. Hopefully I can score goals and help the team move up the league.'

Ryan Taylor is the other new striker, joining on an 18-month deal from Bristol City.

He told the website: 'I’m very happy to be here and I just want to start playing some games now.I’ve been sat on the bench at Bristol City and asked the manager if I could leave. He said yes and when I heard that Pompey were interested it was an easy decision.

'It’s a club with a massive fanbase and I can’t wait to show the supporters just what I can do.'

The third signing is former Reading and Aston Villa defender Nicky Shorey.

The 32-year-old left Bristol City last month and told the club: 'I’ve played at Fratton Park many times before and there has always been a great atmosphere, so I am delighted to now be playing for the fans here.

'I’ll always remember the 7-4 defeat Reading suffered in the Premier League because I missed a penalty and it was an interesting day to say the least. You can never say anything for definite in football, but with people like Richie Barker and Steve Coppell – who I know really well – here then it will only be a matter of time before we get back to where we want to be.'
