Manager Richie Barker is well-progressed in working out who he wants to keep at Pompey - and how many new faces he feels he needs to bring in during January.

Barker's first four games at the Pompey helm have given him plenty of opportunities to assess his squad ahead of the opening of the transfer window.

He takes his team to Southend on New Year's Day knowing he has a busy and vital month ahead of him as he gets the squad into the shape he wants for the rest of the season.

Barker told The News: ‘I have not totally decided who is staying but I am on the way – I have an idea of where I need to be. I would like to get a few in and we need help for numbers for a start because we can hardly fill the bench.

‘There was a development player on the bench yesterday (Maloney), two if you include Ash (Harris). I know he has been in and around the first-team but we are going to need numbers to start with.

‘That is not that much manoeuvring but I knew what it was when I took the job and it’s not what people think, it’s a tough one.’
