The race to be Pompey's next manager has hotted up as the team prepare for a third game under caretaker boss Andy Awford.

Oxford United have given permission for Chris Wilder to speak to Pompey as Steve Claridge becomes the latest name linked with succeeding Guy Whittingham.

Oxford say they don't want to lose Wilder but would not want to stop him talking to other clubs. The United chairman has criticised the timing of Pompey's approach for their man.

Meanwhile The News says it understands former Fratton favourite Claridge - who ironically had Whittingham alongside him during his previous reign at Pompey - has applied for the vacancy.

Claridge was thought to be among candidates meeting the Pompey boardtoday in Newbury on the first day of interviews.

Richie Barker and Wilder are other possibles but Newport County have rejected an approach by Pompey to speak to their manager Justin Edinburgh.

Barker, says The News, remains a strong contender and would come with Steve Coppell, who would serve in a director of football-style role.

Coppell has now left Crawley, where he was working without a contract, and it is believed would not request a wage for linking up with Pompey.

The paper said they believed Claridge had lined up Steve Walford and Steve Guppy for his backroom team if successful.

On Wednesday night Pompey bid to move away from the wrong end of League Two when they host Wycombe for the match called off in October at half-time because of a waterlogged pitch.

Were the board right to sack Whittingham? Should they even have done it sooner, or should they have given him longer? And who do you fancy as the new boss? Discuss it all in our forum. It's quick and easy to register.
