Trevor Carson won't play for Pompey on Saturday - but there's no reason to think a change of manager at Bury will see him recalled to Gigg Lane. That's the view of Pompey chief exec Mark Catlin as he seeks to reassure fans over the future of a player who's been critical to the recent upturn in form.

Kevin Blackwell has lost his job at Bury, who are struggling in the League Two, but the Blues believe Carson is likely to stay at Fratton because the loan deal was done with Bury's chairman, not Blackwell.

Catlin told The News: ‘I would be highly surprised if the change of manager affected Trevor being here. The agreement we have is not with the manager but the chairman, Stewart Day.

‘I suppose, normally, any new manager would want his players back from loans to have a look at that. But this deal was brokered directly with the chairman, not the manager, that’s the truth.

‘Trevor has done well since he came here. I regard him highly and have done since my Bury days. The fans there rated him very highly up until the day he left. Guy Whittingham did his homework and also took my views on board.

‘But they had an issue with finances and, with three goalkeepers, wanted one off the wage bill. I have not got any concerns about Trevor going back there now the manager as gone.’

Meanwhile, Pompey plan to send Dan Butler out on loan, with the left-back having dropped down the pecking order at Fratton.
