Simon Ferry says he is delighted to get his Pompey goal account up and running - even if his strike at Burton wasn't exactly a classic. And he says he is enjoying forming a midfield partnership with Johhny Ertl.

Speaking after his goal helped Pompey register their first away league win of the season, Ferry told the club website: 'I’m delighted. It wasn’t the best, but I’ll take it whatever way it comes and hopefully I can get a few more this season.

'Ricky probably should have scored with the first shot, but I just followed up on the goalkeeper’s mistake and got a tap-in.'

Ferry said of his pairing with Ertl - which is keeping Romain Padovani out of the starting line-up: 'It’s been a bit stop-start because Johnny got suspended and I had a little niggle in my toe, but hopefully we can now form a decent partnership.'

And the midfielder was pleased that, for once, Pompey showed they could hold on to a lead away from home.

'It’s a great win for us – a fantastic result that we needed after the last couple of weeks,' he told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk. 'You’re not going to throw people forward when you’re away from home. But we’ve been working all week on how to defend when other teams do just that and I think it paid dividends.

'We’ve been playing well – the performances certainly haven’t been bad. We do play good football for this league. It’s just some stupid mistakes that have stopped us from winning games and if we can cut them out then I’m sure we can go on to win more.

'If we keep things tight at the back then we’ve got guys like Barchy, Holmes, Pat and Jed who are going to create chances. We’ve played four away games without losing which is fantastic and haven’t been beaten this season when we’ve had 11 men on the pitch.'
