It's the theme of the week - and one which is being continued by David James.

And it goes along the lines of: We mustn't let the fact we're in the FA Cup final distract us from trying to finish fifth in the leage.

Pompey's hopes will be boosted tonight if Everton fail to beat Chelsea at Goodison Park. The Blues head to Mancchester City on Sunday and after that will have just three games left.

James followed in the thoughts of Jermain Defoe when he said the push for Europe must continue on both fronts and not just focus on the Cup final on May 17.

'We've got the FA Cup final at the end of the season and people could excuse you for taking your eye off the ball in the league," James told the Daily Telegraph.

'But we want to finish in fifth place and it's testament to the team that it is still there for us to achieve.'

His sentiments are echoed by Richard Hughes, who is confident Pompey can nab the UEFA Cup spot available through a fifth-placed finish.

'We’ve got a fantastic backbone through the team – from the defenders through to the midfielders and the strikers, who work very hard. And behind us we have the best goalkeeper in the country,' Hughes told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk.

'If we keep keeping clean sheets then we’ll give ourselves a chance of finishing fifth, because we’ve got goalscorers at the club. Jermain Defoe is the best goalscorer I’ve ever played with, and given the chances he’s going to score them.

'Everton’s run-in is difficult, but we’ve got to look at our own games, which are hard enough. Going to Manchester City on Sunday will be tricky, while on the last day we’ve got Fulham, who are fighting for their lives at the bottom.

'Manchester City started off tremendously well and although they’re European challenge has faltered a little they’ve progressed from last season. Some fantastic young players have come through while Richard Dunne has been one of the defenders of the season in my eyes. And of course there’s Benji up front. Once he settles in, he’ll score goals, like he did at Portsmouth.

'But with our away from this season, hopefully we can go there and pick up three points. So we’ll be looking to run Everton all the way.'
