Pompey's 'active' January transfer window could be set to continue as another loanee has definitely gone and another is wanted by a divisional rival.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has returned to Peterborough by mutual consent after manager Guy Whittingham decided the midfielder had failed to make the desired impact at Fratton.

‘With Nathaniel, he has not made the impact we thought he was going to. We want people who are going to be here for a while so there is no point having him sticking around,' he told The News.

And striker Paul Benson, on loan from Swindon, is a target for Crawley Town when his loan deal at Fratton expires this month.

Whether Pompey will want to try to retain the services of the 33-year-old who has scored twice since arriving from the County Ground remains to be seen.

Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio is happy to let the striker go, but Pompey are still in the process of cutting costs to the bone, so it could be Crawley could swoop.

The return of young defender Dan Butler from his loan spell at Havant and Waterlooville is evidence of this, but Whittingham hopes to bring some more faces in before Saturday's game against Notts County.

Former Pompey trainee James Keene, a striker who has carved out a successful career in Sweden, is believed to be a top target.
