Pompey's caretaker boss wants the Blues to be sharper - and nastier - in an effort to turn around their poor run of results.

Guy Whittingham says Pompey must accept the need for 'horrible' football now and then in order to win games - or at least stop losing them.

He insists the players want to do well for the club to repay the fantastic support they continue to receive from fans, who again made themselves heard at Gigg Lane.

Whittingham told the official website: 'We had a good discussion in the dressing room. It wasn’t heated, but it was sensible. When you’re on a run like this it’s hard work that’s needed. We look at other sides and try to work out why we’ve lost games.

'Maybe we have to be nastier. We accept things too easily and we need to do what teams do to us. We’ve got good players in our squad, but that’s not showing at the moment. Nasty was the word that everyone was using.

'It’s a tough, physical league and you don’t get time on the ball – and when you’re not playing well things don’t go for you.

'We were playing little balls in midfield and kept getting caught out. That gave Bury a lift. We have to accept that this is the league we’re in and that we might have to get some results the horrible way.

'The players care. They want to do well for this club and for the fans. I didn’t have to bring up how good the supporters were because they did. They really do appreciate the support this football club has and want to do a lot better.

Whittingham felt Pompey were unlucky to concede a penalty for Bury's killer second goal but said that was no excuse for the loss.

'For me it wasn’t a penalty, but the referee’s made the decision and we just have to get on with it. We did pretty well in the first half and the lads did most of what we asked them to do. We were unfortunate to go in a goal down.

'Defensively we were disciplined, but then lost concentration on the edge of the box and the ball went through a melee of players and ended up in the net. Maybe one of our players should have stayed on the post and cleared it.

'We weren’t as good in the second half. Bury came out of the blocks a lot quicker and I don’t think we had the ball in their half for the first 15 minutes. We need to be a bit sharper in and around the opposition area and that’s something we’ll have to work on.'
