Pompey skipper Brian Howard is focusing on the need to get League One points on the board against Brentford after apologising for his team's poor performance in their FA Cup exit to Notts County.

Howard admitted the Blues' efforts in their 2-0 defeat to the Magpies simply weren't good enough but said the league was the top priority and the players must now lift themselves for the task of climbing up League One.

The County defeat was their third on the bounce following defeats at Stevenage and Sheffield United, but they have a quick chance to get back to winning ways when Brentford visit Fratton on Tuesday night.

Howard told the club website: 'It’s always disappointing to lose a game of football. The lads were gutted in the dressing room and I’d like to personally apologie to the fans. We’ve been knocked out of the FA Cup in the first round and that is not acceptable.

'We were second to most things, sloppy mistakes crept in and it wasn’t a good game of football. But we do need to look at the bigger picture. The odds of us winning the competition are very slim and there are more important things ahead.

'We have huge games coming up and in football there is always an opportunity to put things right just around the corner. Notts County got the better of us, but we have played pretty well over the last few weeks. Getting points on the board remains our priority, We have a bare squad, but must try to pick up as many points as we can.'

We'll have a Pompey-Bees preview on this website on Monday night
