Carl Dickinson says he is delighted to be playing in front of fans who are up there with the best in the country - but he will certainly want results to improve as his loan spell continues.

The full-back's second Blues debut ended in a 2-1 defeat at Stevenage and Michael Appleton wasn't over-impressed at the way his team's defending made it easy for the hosts to score.

That said, Dickinson had a committed debut and has given Appleton an extra option in a position he has had problems with this season.

Dickinson told the Pompey website how the players were disappointed to have lost: 'It was just a case of conceding two sloppy goals. We didn’t get tight enough to Stevenage which enabled them to dictate the player and then we let in a bad goal. But in the second half I think they only had a couple of shots and Mikkel Andersen did not have many saves to make during the game.

'To be fair they chucked their bodies in where it hurts, but we created chances and hopefully we can start to turn them into goals. We had our opportunities to go in front and there are plenty of positives to take – particularly after the break. That’s something we need to take into our upcoming matches. There are some very good footballers in our dressing room and we know what we’re capable of.'

Dickinson said he was only too happy to be back at Pompey, where he is on loan from Watford.

'I loved my spell here last time. The fans are brilliant and up there with the best I have seen in the country,' he said. 'I was delighted to come back and I’m just pleased that I could go out and get the chance to play some football.'

Appleton didn't mince his words after the Stevenage defeat, saying: 'I’m so disappointed with that. We played some really good football at times tonight.

‘They defended really well against us, all credit to them for that, and we had enough opportunities. We deserved more than we got and there were definitely plenty of positives to take out of the performance.’
