Mustapha Dumbuya believes Pompey can head to Stevenage on Tuesday full of confidence after making it four wins from five League One games with the victory over Shrewsbury.

The full-back returned to the side - although at left-back not his usual position of right-back - belives competition for places is helping push the Blues up the table.

They're 11th after their recent good run while Bury - who have the same number of points the Blues had just a month ago after their defeat at Notts County - are bottom.

Dumbuya told the Pompey website: 'It’s definitely what you need in football. Sometimes you wonder if you’ll be playing again immediately, but I’m pleased the manager has faith in me and it’s a good feeling to be back in the side.

'If your place is guaranteed week in, week out there’s a possibility you might become complacent and your form will drop. Sometimes you need that push from behind, to know that someone is there who also desperately wants to play. It gives you a huge incentive to keep playing well.

'We’re on a good run at the moment and we have the confidence to go there knowing we can get something from the game (at Stevenage).'

Dumbuya paid tribute to the front two, Izale McLeod and Wes Thomas, for scoring the goals that have led Pompey's recent charge. And he said he didn't mind where Michael Appleton asked him to play.

He said: 'Izale has been working really hard on his finishing in training and is getting his reward for that. The belief has always been there in our squad – we just hadn’t gelled. That’s changed now and the team looks much stronger.

'As for me, I’m happy to play wherever the manager tells me to play – just as long as I’m on the pitch.'
