Michael Appleton says the question of whether his immediate future lies at Pompey is one he can't really answer - because no other club has spoken to him.

But some in Burnley have him as favourite to take over at Turf Moor following Eddie Howe's return to Bournemouth.

Appleton has been linked with the Clarets and Bolton, with Pompey fans worried the continued uncertainty over Pompey's ownership and their long-term stbility could tempt him to leave the job he took on in very different circumstances 11 months ago.

As ever, the Pompey boss is not afraid to answer questions about his future, even if he admits there's not a lot to say.

'I suppose with me being from up north people are going to put two and two together and make their own ideas up on what I am or am not going to do,' he said.

'To be honest, my kids live up north. But football is one of those games that if you play, manage or coach, anyone who is part of my family realises I might be there one minute, the next minute I might not.

'Now, at the minute, I am settled down here. I have been down here nearly 12 months. It's a little bit warmer than it is up north and I have got a lot of friends here now.

'It's a difficult one really in terms of I have not spoken to any one of those two football clubs. And until they contact this club it is a question I cannot really answer. If there is no truth in it, what can I do?'

Burnley website Nonaynever is reporting Appleton as the new bookies' favourite for the Turf Moor post, quoting Oddschecker as their source.

The site says: 'After a couple of slow days in the market where nothing much happened, it’s exploded into life today. The new favourite is Jason Statham lookalike Michael Appleton, who seems like he will be leaving Portsmouth this month, whether it is to Burnley, Bolton or Blackburn.

'Former West Brom coach Appleton is now as short as 7/2 in the market and the clear favourite, although his name isn’t coming up in local newspaper reports so far.'
