Jon Harley says beating Crewe was vital after Pompey's JPT flop against Wycombe - and believes they can now press on and continue with their winning form in the league.

The utility man played on the right as the Blues blew away the Railwaymen in the first 20 minutes and was delighted by his own performance and that of the team.

It came as Michael Appleton was linked with Burnley and Bolton's managerial vacancies - with the Pompey boss saying he has had contact from neither club.

Harley wanted to concentrate on the job done against Crewe, courtesy of early goals by Wes Thomas, which he set up with a cross, and Izale McLeod from the penalty spot.

Harley told the Pompey website: 'We were looking for a reaction from Tuesday night’s performance and we got that. We really wanted to get in Crewe’s faces and press them. That’s what we did and we got our reward in the first couple of minutes. Then we managed to kick on from there. Our work-rate was really good and that started from the front two.

'We’re on a good run of form in the league and that’s continued – there are a lot of positives to take.'

Harley was happy to play on the right even if it is not his usual side of the pitch.

He added: 'I was playing on the right and then straight away I found myself on the left! It’s an area that I find myself more accustomed to, but I put in the cross and there was still a lot to do for Wes. It was a fantastic finish.

'I have played on the right a few times before, so it’s not totally new to me. If we all do our job as a team then it’s easy enough to play there. It was an enjoyable day for me, but more importantly it was a good all-round effort. As long as I’m out there playing, I couldn’t care less where I am. If we’re doing well and winning games then I’ll enjoy myself.'

Appleton is keen to cool talk of him being linked with other jobs and hopes it does not affect his players. He said: 'I can't control what other people around me think - how the fans and players react to it. But I've got a tough enough job here to start worrying about other jobs.'
