From the high of seven points out of nine in a week, Pompey's season hit a new low when they were dumped out of the JP Trophy by League Two outfit Wycombe.

Many felt the competition represented a good chance for the Blues to have a morale-boosting cup run but the writing was on the wall as early as 13 seconds into the game when Joel Grant gave the Chairboys a lead that stunned Fratton.

Dean Morgan made it 2-0 and added the visitors' third from a follow-up to a penalty after Izale McLeod had given the Blues hope with another goal, against one of his former clubs.

Pompey must put this confidence-sapping defeat behind them quickly if they're to keep up their recent good work in League One.

It is one of those results that will divide opinion among fans - for each one who says 'it doesn't matter, it was only the JPT' there will be another who will say the game represents a missed opportunity to keep up momentum and take another step on the road, albeit a minor route, to Wembley.

Akos Buzsaky made his first start for Pompey and Simon Eastwood also featured in goal in place of Mikkel Andersen. Eastwood had a rude awakening just 13 seconds in after Grant curled in the opening goal at the end of a Wycombe attack straight from kick-off.

Jo Kuffour struck a post in an amazing start for the visitors and, with Pompey looking shell-shocked, you couldn't really argue with Wycombe going 2-0 up before 10 minutes were on the clock.

This time Eastwood saved well from Kuffour in a penalty-box scramble but Morgan put away the loose ball with defenders too slow to hoof it to safety.

Goal machine Gabor Gyepes went closest for Pompey with a header but Wycombe looked just as likely to stretch the lead. Kuffour hit a post for Wycombe while Pompey managed their fair share of attacks and Buzsaky, Wes Thomas and McLeod all went close to getting Pompey back into it.

The crowd were growing impatient with the state of play but they were brought to life moments before the break when keeper Bull failed to hold on to a Thomas ball across goal and McLeod converted at the second attempt.

The home fans felt that had set Pompey up nicely for a second-half battle royale but it was 3-1 to Wycombe a little over 10 minutes after the restart.

Adam Webster tripped Bruno Andrade as he surged into the box and though Morgan’s penalty was pushed out by Eastwood, the taker put away the rebound.

Ashley Harris was a popular introduction in place of Michalik and that man Gyepes was unlucky not to make it 3-2 with a well-saved header.

Pompey had the lion's share of the play in the final 20 minutes but put the keeper under very little pressure and Wycombe had a bit to spare in holding out for what for them was a famous win and what for Pompey was a night best quickly forgotten.

So no Wembley trip in the League Cup or JPT - and with Gosport Borough just one win away from the FA Cup first round, in which Pompey will feature this year, some might be worried about another lower-league banana skin being around the corner...
