Pompey's players are itching to get back on the pitch and repay the fans who suffered their woeful defeat at Hull by beating Blackpool.

Aaron Mokoena says the back-to-back home games against Ian Holloway's side and Peterborough are massive for the Blues after they lost successive games on the road.

Meanwhile Steve Cotterill insists that bad luck has been one of the factors in Pompey's low points tally so far.

Mokoena has told the Pompey website: 'We’ve got two big home games coming up – they’re massive matches for us. I’m not saying that the other games we’ve played this season haven’t been important, but these could be key. We don’t want to be where we are in the league, so we have to make sure we win on Saturday and on Tuesday to get our season started.

'We’re all looking forward to Saturday’s game against Blackpool because it gives us a chance to make amends for the Hull defeat. It was a disappointing display after we’d performed so well against West Ham the previous week. So this is a big game for us and we have to show up. We need to be at our best.

'Blackpool are a fantastic side with experienced players. They’ve got lots of players who have played in the Premier League. But we’ve got a talented squad and have had some good training sessions so far this week. We’ve looked sharp. Now we need to defend well as a team on Saturday and hope we can score some goals at the other end.'

Cotterill will be hoping the Blackpool clash brings a change in fortunes for his troops and said: 'We seem to be getting punished for every wrongdoing at the moment. A mistake ends up in the back of our net. A tackle ends up being a booking, a booking ends up being a sending off, that’s very harsh.

‘That is what’s happening to us at the moment. I know how Kenny Dalglish must be feeling. We have got to learn from that, though, because one thing for sure, we can’t have that keep happening with the size of our squad. All this is happening and I don’t know whether it is the players still bedding in or whether there are players in the team who can’t quite do what I want with them at this moment in time.'
