It's more of a flat-line day than deadline day at Fratton

Deadline day was more dead than line at Fratton Park as Pompey chose not to top up the 10 players added to the squad during the summer with any 11th-hour deals.

Jed Wallace was the last man of the window to arrive after signing from Lewes around 24 hours before the window closed.

Some fans will be disappointed the Blues did not join in the melee that saw millions of pounds change hands as the hours ticked down, but there is a strong feeling Steve Cotterill will bring in one or two loans once the emergency window opens next week and top clubs have settled on who is and is not in their 25-man squads for the first half of the season.

Pompey's lack of late activity was exactly as predicted by Cotterill, who said before deadline day began: 'I’m not expecting us to do anything. I just think that’s going to be us now.

‘There may be an emergency loan, maybe. I don’t expect us to do any business before the window closes. If anything, there may be something in the emergency window, but I don’t know that at the moment.

‘I would have liked a couple more but I guess every manager you’d speak to would like a couple more. There were another couple of pieces I would like to have done. If we aren’t able to do it, we aren’t able to do it. We have to get on with what we’ve got.’

Meanwhile Pompey lost their rearranged friendly 5-1 at Real Betis. Lewis Stockford and Lewis Tallack both started the clash for depleted Pompey, while Sam Magri and Adam Webster appeared as second-half substitutes.

Luke Varney netted a last-minute goal for Pompey after the Spaniards had scored three in the first half and two in the second.
