Pompey chief executive David Lampitt has given his most forthright interview yet about the need to get a takeover deal done. Before now Lampitt has, understandably, had to sit on the fence on matters concerning the club's owners.

But now, in an interview with The News, he acknowledge the importance of avoiding another summer of no-one knowing who will be holding the purse strings come the start of next season.

What Lampitt says is not rocket science - nevertheless it is heartening to hear the man at the helm giving such an honest appraisal of Pompey's urgent need to move foreward.More

Lampitt told The News's Jordan Cross: ‘It’s so important that we have some certainty about the transaction as soon as possible. We can then continue the process of rebuilding over the summer and beyond. It’s important move forward now. It’s for the good of the operation of the club that is the case. We need to get these things sorted as soon as possible.’

‘The process of rebuilding a great football club, which the supporters can be proud of, is only just beginning. We’ve been through a tough recovery process and extreme financial distress. With the circumstances I came into, I didn’t anticipate it being anything else. It’s probably been tougher than I thought it would be – and I knew it would be tough.

‘To be where we are on and off the pitch, though, looking at where we were a year ago, is no small achievement. I’m the same as the manager, probably, in that we are not sitting back on it. The job is only part done. So now the challenge is to build on that and carry the club forward.’

Convers Sports Initatives remain the likely buyer from Balram Chainrai and Co, but there is no news on how close they are to completing the deal.
