Plenty of reasons for Pompey to keep run going

Jamie Ashdown says the play-offs are still in sight for Pompey – but even if they prove beyond them, a good end to the season can stand the squad in good stead for 2011-12.

In the last nine games, Pompey have won seven and kept eight clean sheets – a run they want to continue at Reading on Saturday when they will be facing Ashdown’s former club.

’‘You always want to go into every game hoping to keep a clean sheet, and Reading at the weekend is no different,’ Ashdown told the Pompey website.

‘The most important thing for me and the lads is that we continue the run of form that has saw us lose just once in 10 games before the international break kicked in.

‘There’s no reason why we feel that the play-offs are not still within reach at this time. But if its not to be then in aiming for the play offs we want to accumulate enough points to finish as high up the table as possible.

‘That would then leave the team in good stead and prepare us to continue this into next season. The results over the last 10 games have been what we’ve been striving for most of the season. It’s been an achievement when you consider the start we had. The first seven or eight games were a virtual write off.

‘Now we’re in the last eight games we can aim as high as we possibly can. And from a personal point of view it would be lovely to complete a 100 per cent league and cup record this season by starting every game.’
