Greg Halford set up a winning goal for Pompey with one his long throw-ins – then admitted: It’s about time.

There was plenty of talk about the on-loan Wolves defender’s Stoke-style missiles into the box when he arrived at Fratton, but they haven’t caused too many goals or near misses – until now. And now Halford hopes the victory at Leicester can spur the Blues on to a play-off push.

Halford told the Pompey website: ‘It’s about time we scored from a throw. The pitch was alright and with the use of the multi-ball system, I was able to get a bit of purchase on the throw.

‘It caused some danger and we knew the keeper was reluctant to come for crosses, so we piled it on top of him and it came off. We needed that win to get ourselves back in contention for the play-offs after two games without a victory.’

Halford praised the whole-team defensive work which has earned Pompey seven clean sheets in nine games, saying: ‘Everyone’s chipping in from Dave Kitson right the way through to Jamie Ashdown. Kits was magnificent – it was probably one of the best games I’ve seen him play. He was fantastic, as was the rest of the team.

‘We’re working hard and we’ve got a good understanding – not just defensively. We’re looking to pass the ball and not just go long. Now we want to push on, get more points and keep moving towards the play-off places.’

Pompey now have a fortnight’s break before their next game – away to Reading – with eight games remaining for them to make up the eight points which separate them from the play-offs.
