Southampton winger Jason Puncheon seems unlikely to spend the rest of the season at Fratton Park – even though Pompey are rumoured to be one of a host of Premier League and Championship clubs chasing him.

Puncheon, impressive for Millwall at Fratton on Boxing Day during a loan spell in which he has scored five goals in seven games, could turn out to be one of the hot properties of the January transfer window. But it would appear Pompey could only bring him in if it was to replace a departing striker.

There’s been speculation Blackpool could make a new bid for David Nugent, and it’s hard to see the Blues bringing in an extra attacker unless someone like Nugent left.

Puncheon’s agent Tony Finnigan told Sky Sports: ‘There is considerable interest in Jason. He is capable of playing at the highest level and it is not a surprise the clubs are showing an interest.

‘But at the moment, all enquiries need to be fielded by Nicola Cortese [chairman] at Southampton.’

Blackpool, West Brom and Wolves are all chasing the 24-year-old.

Meanwhile, Nadir Ciftci could be fit to come back into the squad on Saturday after missing the trip to Nottingham Forest with an ankle injury. But his return to fitness may be offset by a hamstring injury threatening to keep John Utaka out of the visit of Leeds on Saturday.
