500,000 bid for Pompey striker would be an insult

Pompey are likely to tell Blackpool what they can do with an offer of £500,000 for David Nugent if one is forthcoming.

The Blues may still have their backs against the wall where money is concerned but talk of such a valuation of a proven scorer at Championship level at a time when Darren Bent is moving in a deal worth up to £24m is an insult - both to Pompey and Nugent.

Ian Holloway will be looking to strengthen his squad to make sure the hard work of the first half of the season is not undone by a dip in form in the second half, and the Seasiders have not been parting with silly money to keep their dream alive.

But a £500,000 bid for Nugent, one of Pompey's top scorers and best performers this season, will be laughed out of Fratton Park if it is made - evne if losing Nugent from the squad would significantly reduce the wage bill.

Nugent was courted by Blackpool in the summer, when they were keen on a loan deal, but a deal could not be struck - not least because the ex-Preston striker didn't answer his phone when his views on the move were sought.

Any bid for one of Steve Cotterill's players will be a test for the owners, who have been worryingly quiet this transfer window - both publicly and in terms of telling Cotterill what their strategy is.

SOS Pompey plan a peaceful protest outside Fratton from 2pm on Saturday - a day when one of the owners, Balram Chainrai, is expected to be present - to try to force those who hold the purse strings to admit what their plans are for PFC.

Cotterill has becoming increasingly concerned at his lack of resources and with Aaron Mokoena joining Greg Halford and Dave Kitson on the banned list for the visit of Leeds, and one or two injury worries adding to his woes, the Pompey boss may have just 13 outfield players to choose from.

That's another reason why any bid for Nugent - derisory or not - ought to be resisted.
