Pompey boss Steve Cotterill has been urged to hand the captain’s armband to Liam Lawrence after Aaron Mokoena earned a second ban of the season with another booking at Nottingham Forest.

Former Fratton favourite Alan McLoughlin says Mokoena needs to have the captaincy taken away from him – and Lawrence, who has been one of Pompey’s most consistent performers this season, would the perfect candidate to take over.

Writing in his column in The News McLoughlin said: ‘It's time Liam Lawrence took over the captaincy from Aaron Mokoena. For me, Mokoena and Sonko are not forming a good enough partnership – it's not consistent.

‘I thought Mokoena made a ridiculous challenge to get a booking and he will now be suspended again after getting his 10th booking of the season. He had players covering him, there was no real danger and it was needless to go sliding in from behind.

‘Now he's suspended, I'd like to see the captaincy go to Lawrence and I'd be more than happy for him to retain it when Mokoena is back. Mokoena needs to get back to being a defender and doing his job correctly.

‘Lawrence gives you consistently good performances and he dishes out encouragement and kicks people up the backside at the right time. As a captain, you have responsibility. If you are making mistakes yourself, it's difficult to dish out stick to others.’

Mokoena captained Pompey to the FA Cup final last season but has struggled for form this term as Cotterill has struggled to field a settled defence. The South African’s booking at the City Ground was his tenth of the season.
