New arrival Ritchie de Laet found much to impress him despite his Pompey debut turning sour with Nottingham Forest's two late goals turning victory into defeat.

The defender, on loan from Manchester United, praised his team-mates for a performance that so nearly spelled the end of Forest's long unbeaten home run and also hailed the fans who he already knew would be there in numbers.

De Laet is looking forward to the next two games - at home to Leeds and Burnley - when he hopes the Blues can start to turn their recent poor results at home.

The 22-year-old told the Pompey website: 'I thought we would get three points and it would be a perfect start for me. We got the goal and knew they would put pressure on us in the second half. We just needed to head and kick everything away.

'We did that until just a few minutes before the end and then conceded an unlucky goal. Even then we wanted to come away with a point – and it would have been a good point.

'We looked brilliant and until the final few minutes you couldn’t see them scoring a goal. They hadn’t really had any shots before then. But in the end there’s a dink into the box and he gets the goal – it’s heartbreaking for us and for the fans.

'We should have come away with three points but we didn’t. Now we’ve got two home games coming up. If we win those then we’re back up there and you don’t know what will happen.'

De Laet is already finding himself at home at Pompey and said: 'The lads are brilliant. It’s not a big squad but everyone’s joking and laughing in training and I felt good here right away. I know a couple of players from my time at Stoke which makes things easier for me as well.

'And the fans were excellent. I remember they were good in the Premier League but even in the Championship they travel in large numbers and make you proud to wear the Pompey shirt.'
