Pompey’s forwards and midfielders can do their bit to help the Blues win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday – by helping the team defend better than they have been of late.

Boss Steve Cotterill says every one of the 11 players he sends out at the City Ground (if he can find that many…) will have a responsibility to help stem the flow of goals that have been scored past Pompey in recent games – 12 in the last four games.

Cotterill told the Pompey website: ‘Forest will be a tough game because they’ve been on a great run of form at home. They’ve got a good squad and manager and have done well. Their record at home is marvellous and we know we’re going to have our hands full. But if we can start well and get a foothold, who knows?

‘We’ve got enough experienced players who have played at a good level to be able to go there with confidence. We are where we are with the back four. My teams are normally set up to keep clean sheets but here this season we’re set up to try to score more than the other side.

‘When I arrived here in the summer we had just one defender and the lads who have come in have done their best, but in terms of clean sheets we’ve not been able to piece together the jigsaw quite right. Individual errors have cost us on several occasions, but those mistakes have come whoever has played.

‘But it’s not just about the back four and the goalkeeper. We need to defend from the front. We attack and defend as a team so when our full-backs push on, for instance, they need protection to make sure we don’t get overloaded.’
