Michael Brown could be Wolves-bound as Steve Cotterill prepares to replace him in central midfield with Liam Lawrence.

Brown has almost certainly played his last game for the Blues after failing to agree reduced terms to stay at Fratton, and Mick McCarthy has refused to rule out a move for the former Sheffield United midfield man. And Cotterill says Lawrence is a ready-made engine room partner for Hayden Mullins.

McCarthy is on the lookout for a holding-type midfielder after missing out on Steve Sidwell and said: 'I was interested in Sidwell and I nearly had that deal done. So I was looking at that position. But I won't confirm or deny Brown.

'It's really got to be somebody that's played in the Premier League with the spine of the team. You might get away with a wide player or a young full-back, but I don't see them around.'

Cotterill says Lawrence - who is likely to give the Blues a boost by being fit for the tough trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday - can play in central midfield without any problems.

'I think Liam could play in the centre of midfield regularly. He is pretty flexible. He can play anywhere across those midfield positions,' said the Pompey boss in The News.

'I thought him and Hayden in there were tremendous against Hull and him staying there permanently wouldn't be something I would rule out. It is something I spoke to him about when he joined us, even going back to just before he signed.

'When I bring somebody in I always like to know if they have got another position up their sleeve because when you have got a smaller squad it doesn't half help.

'Liam plays wide from out to in and when he plays central he plays from in to out. I know that might sound puzzling but I know what I mean. That's a couple of positions now he has played for us. I remember asking him at Middlesbrough at half-time – when we were 2-0 down – if he had ever played right-back. He said "no" so I told him he would do by the end of the day! That was a shock to him and it worked.'

Cotterill admitted playing Lawrence in the centre could leave him short on the right but hinted that Greg Halford or Joel Ward coulf be used in that position. Halford's loan is being extgended to the end of the season.'
