Steve Cotterill is hoping he will get the go-ahead to bring in three players during this month’s transfer window.

The Pompey boss has handed chief executive David Lampitt his wish-list to boost a squad which badly needs new blood. And he hopes to further strengthen his ranks with a loan or two. Meanwhile, Cotterill has also revealed news regarding Greg Halford and Liam Lawrence.

Cotterill feels the squad has long needed strengthening and said: 'I've handed the chief executive three names of players I think will come in and do very well for us. I have given names over now, so it's up to the chief executive to speak to other chief executives.

'They are permanent players but I don't know when they will be done. There's another loan we are still trying to work on. Hopefully we'll know something about that by the end of this week.

'I am sure the chief executive will go and make a few phone calls. We've just got to carry on until perhaps those people come over the line.’

He added: ‘Our lads have been through a gruelling period over Christmas and the New Year, pretty much the same lads playing week in and week out. It's essential we bring in replacements. There are three players I would like to get so let's see how we get on with that.’

Halford, meanwhile, is expected to return to Pompey for the rest of the season. He is one game into a three-game band for his sending-off against Hull.

Cotterill said: 'Hopefully Halford will be sorted and can kick in this week.’

Pompey are likely to be without Dave Kitson for the next three games – the visit to Nottingham Forest on Saturday and the home games against Leeds and Burnley on January 22 and 25.

And Cotterill is also sweating on the fitness of Liam Lawrence, who came off at Brighton with a hip problem.

‘It's very early to say whether Liam Lawrence will be okay for Forest. He's got a bit of a hip flexor problem so we'll have to wait and see,’ the boss added.
