Team-mate leaps to defence of Pompey contract pair - but will Chainrai act?

The row over Michael Brown and Richard Hughes’ contract wrangles has deepened with Liam Lawrence criticising Pompey for not sorting it out and allowing the pair to continue playing.

The saga has divided opinion, with many fans sympathetic to the players, who have reportedly offered to take wage cuts of up to 50 per cent, but others asking why the Blues should continue paying what would still be per week about half what the average man in the street earns in a year.

Pompey have indicated they have made offers to the players, who in turn have said they have made concessions and are now waiting for Pompey to make the next move.

The upshot is a stalemate which will see Brown and Hughes continue to sit on the sidelines while Steve Cotterill struggles for options – in midfield and elsewhere.

News that Greg Halford – who can play in midfield as well as at the back – has lost his rather over-ambitious appeal against his red card at Watford and now may not appear for Pompey again will only limit the manager’s options further as he prepares for an awkward-looking FA Cup trip to Brighton on Saturday.

Lawrence is clearly siding with his team-mates and said: 'I just wish the club would sort this out. I don’t want the fans to think Browney and Hughesie are being greedy because they are not asking for mega money.

'They have offered to take massive pay cuts, not just 10 per cent or 20 per cent but 50 per cent cuts, but the club are not even speaking to them. They come down here every game, they are in the dressing room, they travel to away games and are a proper part of things yet they cannot play, they cannot do their jobs. It p***** me off.'

Lawrence’s outspoken comments will surprise many only days after the ex-Sunderland and Stoke man signed a three-year deal at Fratton.

Whether Balram Chainrai reacts to such comments – or indeed whether he should – remains to be seen.
