Matt Ritchie says he’d rather be playing at Swindon than sitting on the bench at Pompey.

The left-sided player, who impressed in a series of early-season appearances, says the loan move to Wiltshire is best for him as he admits ‘it is not happening’ for him at Fratton Park.

Ritchie, 21, still hopes for a future with Pompey in the longer term. His loan switch has increased speculation that another left-sided star, Hermann Hreidarsson, will soon be back in the first-team frame.

Ritchie said: 'This is something that was on the cards for a little while and something I agreed with. I do not want to sit on the bench, it's better to be out there playing.

'I just want to play as many games as possible and it's not happening for me at Pompey at the moment. Swindon have been interested for a while and I spoke to the gaffer and we both agreed that this was the best thing for me.

'It is a good club, with good fans, a decent bunch of lads and it's not too far for me to travel, so it's ideal really.'

Ritchie was a substitute four times in a loan spell at Swindon last season but is already making a bigger impression this time.

He made his full debut for Swindon on the left of a five-man midfield against Torquay in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday night.

Reports said he was a bright spark throughout a drab 2-0 win.
