Skipper Aaron Mokoena celebrated his first league goal in English football by vowing to sign a new Pompey deal as soon as he can.

The South African headed the Blues into a 2-1 lead during a breath-taking second half against Bristol City, then said he was keen to secure an extension to his Pompey stay – a far cry from the end of last season when he looked certain to leave.

Speaking after his goalscoring role in the 3-1 win over the Robins, he said: 'I was hoping to sign my contract last week but, unfortunately, it never happened. I sent the chief executive a text on Monday because I really want to get this done and dusted so I can focus on my football.

'He responded that he understands and we have got to make it happen. I am just waiting for the chief executive and hopefully he will get back to me and make this happen as soon as possible.’

Mokoena was delighted at the victory and said team spirit had been crucial in driving Pompey on to their first back-to-back league wins for two years.

'I always believe you have to work hard to get luck – and that is what we have been doing the past two games,’ he said. 'We are all in this together. It doesn't have to come from one person. We made it happen together as a team.

'We saw in previous weeks the chances were there. We were creating a lot but we never really converted those. The good thing with our team is we have got experience in ourselves. We have players who have performed in the Premier League. We have players who know how to win games.

'Yes, it's about talent but the most important thing is working hard and we have players who know you need to work hard to make it happen. There is fantastic spirit in the dressing room, there really is, and it's about team work.
