Dave Kitson believes his strike partner David Nugent can be a player transformed after scoring his first league goal in more than 18 months in the thrashing of Leicester.

Kitson, who got two of the six that sent the Foxes packing, says he could see the confidence return to Nugent’s play after he scored the third of Pompey’s goals in the Fratton Park demolition job. The pair will be out to cause similar havoc when Bristol City visit on Tuesday.

Kitson said Nugent deserved the goal and the man of the match award. He said: ‘It was thoroughly deserved. He tore Leicester to pieces in the first half – he was running in the channels, he was winning headers and tackles.

‘He was right in amongst it and was really impressive. It’s good for David – it will give him a lot of confidence. It’s amazing what a goal does for you – the confidence just comes back instantaneously. You can see it unfolding right before your eyes.’

Kitson was also chuffed with the result, although stressed it was not the first time Pompey had played well and deserved a win in their league campaign.

He added: ‘They had a man sent off, which helped us, but we played well and created opportunities, and we took the lead when it was 11 v 11.

‘We were good value for the win. Some might say it spoils the game as a spectacle when a team goes down to 10 men but we don’t really care.

‘It gives us something to build on although there were always encouraging signs before when we weren’t getting the results. You need things to go our way. Some days the ball doesn’t fall your way but thankfully this time it did.
