Pompey’s No9 is confident he can be the man to solve the club’s goal drought – when he is fit.

Danny Webber was handed the prized shirt before the season, and now more than ever he is needed in the team and among the goals as the Blues struggle to find the net.

Webber said Pompey’s poor start to the season could be put down in part to the difficulty in adjusting from Premier League to the second tier. He is confident they can turn it round and although there is no firm date yet for his expected comeback, he is well on the road to recovery and looking forward to helping out.

‘Without a doubt I am confident that we can turn things around, despite the slow start the lads have made to the season,’ Webber told Sky Sports.

‘There is always an adjustment period for clubs coming down from the Premier League and I feel that the lads are starting to get a feel for this division now.

‘A lot of these players haven't played in the Championship for a good few years now and it has changed a lot. So I think they have come to terms with it now.

‘We did very well against both Ipswich and Sheffield United despite not scoring, and I'm looking forward to getting myself fit and helping the lads push up the table.’

Steve Cotterill handed 28-year-old Webber the No9 shirt and Webber is impressed by the manager’s start at Fratton.

‘He has come in and tried to install a bit of confidence and belief in the lads because relegation isn't a nice feeling at the end of the day. I'm delighted to be given the number nine shirt and hopefully I can do it justice by scoring a few goals when I return to the fray.’

Webber suffered his serious injury on the same day that Hermann Hreidarsson was ruled out for a similar length of time. The Icelandic defender’s Pompey future seems less certain than Webber’s, though.
