Pompey legend Ray Crawford is giving his full backing to the supporters’ trust – and reckons the team will start to climb the Championship table soon.

The former Fratton favourite will have divided loyalties on Saturday when he covers for BBC Radio Suffolk Pompey’s game with another club where he was revered, Ipswich. He is hoping for a draw – and believes that is much more likely than a couple of weeks ago because of the Blues’ new arrivals.

Crawford was a big hit for Pompey and Ipswich in the 1950s and 1960s and is still a regular at Fratton Park.

‘Ideally I would like both teams to win as Portsmouth need to move off the foot of the table and Ipswich need points to continue their great start to the season,’ he said. ‘But as that cannot happen I’ll plump for a draw. I can speak to both sides afterwards then.

‘I have five grandchildren and now is the time to give radio work a miss although I will continue to watch Portsmouth’s home games. Two weeks ago I would put this down to a comfortable away victory as Portsmouth did not have a lot with players playing out of position.

‘But the arrival of Dave Kitson from Stoke City and the expected loan signing of Liam Lawrence from the same club will make a big difference I’m sure. David Nugent has been working his socks off up front, and with more help Portsmouth can become a force in front of goal.’

Crawford revealed he has been only too happy to back the Pompey Supporters’ Trust, and was one of more than 2,300 to become members.

‘Such was the dire financial situation that if the current club had gone under – and it came close – there would have been another club that would have started off at the lower leagues like AFC Wimbledon have done,’ he said.

‘We have our first annual general meeting next week and the trust looks like continuing in case the financial situation flares up again at Fratton Park. But fingers crossed it won’t and fingers crossed, Pompey will start to move up the table.’

We’ll have an Ipswich match preview on this site on Friday. In the meantime give us your views on the messageboard.
