Ian Holloway is bleating about David Nugent ruining Blackpool’s move to sign him.

The outspoken Tangerines boss says he’d have signed Nugent if he’d answered his phone – though what no-one knows is what Nugent said had he picked up… .

Blackpool had apparently agreed a deal with Pompey for the 25-year-old, who has had spells in the north-west with Preston and Burnley.

But, as the deadline arrived at 6pm last Tuesday, Nugent could not be contacted and Holloway was left disappointed.

‘If the player hadn't gone missing, we'd have had David Nugent,’ Holloway told the Blackpool Gazette. ‘With 20 minutes to go, we had Nugent signed on, but no-one could locate him, so he couldn't sign his contract and it all fell through.

‘So that's one that wriggled out of the net. But it happens. I thought he was one that was worth trying to get, so because of that we put some other deals on hold.

‘Nugent was the main one we targeted. We didn't miss many, but unfortunately that was one we did and it wasn't possible to get a back-up with 20 minutes left.’

Maybe Nugent could have picked up, but didn’t fancy another Premier League relegation battle, preferring instead to stay at Pompey to see if he can strike up a partnership with Dave Kitson.

Meanwhile, Steve Cotterill has revealed landing a right-back is his main aim. Spurs duo Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton are his targets and he hopes to secure one on loan this week.
