Even by Pompey’s standards, deadline day, August 2010. There were more on-or-off questions and rumours than is healthy for anyone, and it all ended up with the squad looking not much stronger or weaker than it was at dawn.

In a nutshell, Pompey signed striker Dave Kitson and midfielder Liam Lawrence and sold Marc Wilson to Stoke for a reported £1m plus the aforementioned pair and Tommy Smith to QPR. Marlon Pack joined Cheltenham on loan – leaving Pompey to bring in an emergency loan or two, or sign a free agent or two, to boost numbers in their thin-looking squad.

Smith is joining QPR for a reported fee of around £1.5m, while Wilson joins Tony Pulis at Stoke in a deal which sees Kitson and Lawrence move to Fratton. That transfer is worth a total of £4.5m - the two players plus £1m cash for the former Pompey skipper.

Lawrence's side of the deal looked to have fallen through during the afternoon but the Irishman eventually agreed on the move.

Midfielder Marlon Pack joined Cheltenham on a season-long loan and 19-year-old defender James Hurst has joined West Brom after a loan spell in Iceland with IBV.

Kitson said after signing for the Blues: ‘I just want to play football again. You go to some places where it doesn't work and have to cut your losses and move on.

‘The deal's been floating about in the media for a week or two, so I was just standing by the phone. I'm happy to be at such a fantastic club. I'm excited to be here and it's a fresh start.

‘Although in situations like these you always want to be a month down the line when you're settled in and know everyone's name. I know a few of the players and (Ibrahima) Sonko's a very good friend of mine.

‘But change is good as well and I'm looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the lads for training and bedding in.’

Kitson and Lawrence will have to wait another week-and-a-half for their debuts, with this weekend a blank one in the Championship. Ipswich are next up for Pompey, at Fratton next Saturday.
