Marlon Harewood may have designs on leading the Pompey line next season, but he could well face competition from Kanu.

Harewood is apparently interested in trying to revivea career which seems to have gone sideways, and anyone who expresses an interest in joining Pompey knowing the uncertainty surrounding the club is not to be sneezed at.

But it seems he is not the only striker interested in carving out a role at Fratton next season.

Kanu has been offered a new contract and his representative Samuel Okoronkwo says he is interested in doing what he can to help a club which has remained as loyal to him as he has to it.

There will be a salary cap of around £10,000 a week for each player next season if proposals put forward by the administrators go ahead, and that must represent a fairly sizeable reduction in what the Nigerian would be taking home.

But he knows he is getting no younger and he might struggle to get a new offer to stay in the Premier League or get as good a deal elsewhere in the Championship or even abroad.

Fans would love to see Kanu still here next season, although whether he has the fitness now to be a regular starter or 90-minute man is questionable. Perhaps the World Cup will tell us how much he still has to offer at the end of a season in which he was used pretty sparingly by Paul Hart and Avram Grant.

Harewood, meanwhile, a Pompey target in the past, says he is available and interested in a new challenge at Fratton after mixed times at clubs including West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle.
