Pompey’s longest-serving player is confident he will be fully fit for the start of the pre-season build-up to life in the Championship.

Richard Hiughes has just had a hernia op after being troubled with the injury towards the end of the season and cruelly missing the Cup final because of it. He reckons he will be fine to join in as soon as Pompey’s squad – whoever that may comprise in a few weeks’ time – reports back after the summer break.

Hughes told The News, for whom he will be penning a World Cup column this summer, said: 'It's been a week since the op. It feels as good as I think it should feel for this stage.

'Lifestyle-wise, it's a pain because I've been virtually bed-ridden. I have to err on the side of caution if I want to be back for pre-season. It's a painful one. All those things which you do in day-to-day life become more difficult.

'Things like sneezing and getting out of bed has been sore, uncomfortable and annoying to say the least. It's not ideal, but I'm healing. There aren't any games so I've still got over four weeks, and it will see me back in time for pre-season.

'I'm over the worst of it. I'm getting the clips out on Friday and there will be no problem with the wound. Then I can get on with things. I will be doing a bit of bike work, but the rehab will be a different process compared to if I was in the season.

'I've been in once and I'll be going in to see Gary Sadler to get a programme for the summer. If it was the season it would be the bike then jogging then three quarters of your maximum. But because it's painful and it's the summer I can take my time.

'It's ideal to take my time. I don't like not being active, so I'll be keen to know what I can and can't do.'
